1 Hr Fire Rated Wall

If a conventional 1 2 inch thick sheet of drywall will stand up to 30 minutes of fire then the added 1 8 inch found in the type x drywall along with its other properties will double your margin of safety to 60 minutes.

According to the book commercial drafting and detailing a typical one hour fire rated wall consists of 2x4 studs spaced 16 inches from the center of one stud to the center of the next covered by 5 8 inch type x gypsum board. This intertek listed assembly is commonly used in 1 hour exterior walls along the property line including single family construction. These wall assembly files are used for planning and estimation purposes for many ul wall types such as fire rated wall assemblies. This assembly is fire rated for 1 hour from both sides.

Using different combinations of board and insulation various system options are available with fire resistances of 30 60 90 or 120 minutes. Code requirements vary an addendum to the assembly allows for the use of common claddings including smartside fiber cement and t1 11 panels.
